U13's secure first silverware of the new season with a fantastic win at Tir Y Birth
Squad - Chris Vanos, Aaron Thomas, Tyrone Evelyn, Luke Loughlin, Declan Fitzgerald, Matt Davies, Mike Wallis, Bradley Crook.
Our first game was at the early ko of 9.50am, against cardiff side Marlbro sports. Being notoriously slow starters things were not looking good after marlbro took a early lead to a well worked goal, our boys huffed and puffed but could just not get going. Marlbro 1 v 0 afc whitchurch.
Next game was against Bargoed and we had finally woken up and played some wonderful football, creating chance after chance but just could not finish them off. with a couple of minutes to go we payed the price for this and bargoed took a well taken break away goal to win the game. bargoed 1 v 0 afc whitchurch. now the boys were on the verge of going home after losing there opening 2 games, a win was desperatly needed and it came in the next game against Cwrt Rawlin where again we dominated possession and took a couple of our many chances. A very long wait for our next game, nearly 2 hours! saw the boys get really bored and frustrated and it looked like it was going to be difficult to get up for this game. Our next fixture was against Pontymister which was a well contested game with both teams creating chances and keepers making saves at both ends, but we just managed to take one chance from a well taken Mike Wallis goal. Our last game was against RCT Ebbw Vale and we were totally outplayed by a big physical team. Ebbw Vale 2 v 0 afc whitchurch.
After that defeat it looked certain the boys were going home early, but by the nature of the group system they finished 4th to qualify for the quarter finals. our quarter final game was against Pontypridd town, a game which we dominated from start to finish, the only surprise it was only 2-0 with goals from Bradley and Mike Wallis.
Semi final was against a well organised Machen team and if it was not for our keeper Chris Vanos we could have easilly been a goal or two down early on, but we played our selves into the game and could have scored a goal or two with better finishing. After extra time it was penalties, our keeper Chris made a fantastic save from their first penalty so now it was up to us not to miss. Bradley, Tyrone and Matt all converted to put the boys into the final.
In the final we played Cwmavon who were everybodies favourite to win the competition but Whitchurch kept the best performance till last, again getting better as the tournament went on. A resounding victory saw us win 3-0. final- afc whitchurch 3 v 0 Cwmavon. Goalscorers, Bradley and Mike W 2.
